Consideración de las Cosas Más Cercanas
Consideración de las cosas más cercanas.
Consideration of the closest matter. Russell Reed ∞ Santino Escatel We are attracted by distant things; they seduce us. We long for new materials, ideas and future memories. We ignore everything that is present, that is here right now. The whole body tends to recur by the force of gravity; an Asymptote moving away steadily (like a desire) in a straight line that never ends--never making contact--the only certainty is this infinite line (curvi-gravitational) that does not fall nor meet. This intervention created on-site in The Vortex for the OUTsider festival was built with pre-existing elements found at the Vortex to create a container for 10 boxes which are activated manually to produce different melodies. These melodies were selected from songs popular during 80's and 90's; the closest things to the more remote: Faith, George Michael; I´m Coming Out, Diana Ross; Unlovable, The Smiths; Love will tear us apart again, JoyDivision; Love is a Stranger, EURYTHMICS; Border Line, Madonna; A Little Respect, Erasure; Brand New Lover, Dead or Alive; Do you really want to hurt me, Boy George and Private dancer, Tina Turner. Russell Reed: As a classical musician, my studies often took me away from my peers, but through these songs I was able to connect with other gay men of similar age. This project is based mostly on that subject's memory as a backbone and a resistance to the current aesthetics. These objects are re-ordered with a playful sense in such a way that the work is closer to an archaeological work than to a museum exhibit. In an age like ours, so saturated with stimuli, information, unsolicited advice, requirements, so-called living options and more, it is easy to lose the sense of the dry land on which we stand, which is nothing more than our own lives. We look to a point that we are told is desirable, and thus we lose sight of the place where we already are. OUTsider Festival 2017 The Vortex Theater, Austin, TX |
